SeaJets vs. Blue Star Ferries: An Honest Comparison

These are the two names you’ll see most often on Cyclades routes, and they represent opposite philosophies of Greek ferry travel. Blue Star runs big conventional ships on reliable schedules; SeaJets runs a fleet of high-speed catamarans that compress the map. Most regular travellers end up using both — the question is which one for which trip.

Blue Star Ferries: the workhorse

Blue Star’s ships are the spine of the Aegean — large, modern vessels that run year-round, carry cars and trucks, and keep sailing in weather that grounds everything else. On board you get open decks, cafés and restaurants, airline seats and cabins on longer routes, and room to walk around. Departures lean early morning from Piraeus. Fares are notably cheaper than high-speeds, and the punctuality culture is strong — islanders set their watches by these boats. The cost: time. Piraeus–Santorini is a 7–8 hour commitment.

SeaJets: the time machine

SeaJets operates one of the largest high-speed fleets in the world, and on calm seas their fastest vessels are remarkable — Piraeus–Santorini in under five hours, island hops that feel like bus rides. Seating is airline-style and assigned; there’s typically no open deck. The fleet varies in age and comfort, so the experience depends partly on which vessel your departure uses. Two honest caveats: fares run well above conventional, and in strong meltemi winds SeaJets departures are the first to cancel or turn uncomfortable. Their schedule ambition is also famous — lots of stops, tight turnarounds — which can mean delays cascade on peak days.

The verdict

There’s no loser here — there’s a right boat for the job. Calm forecast, short trip, hours precious: SeaJets. Windy week, tight budget, car on board, seasick-prone travellers, or an overnight-length route: Blue Star.
